Swim Week Challenges

Diving into Swim Week this year in Miami, The LYCRA® Brand organized many exciting events, challenges and activities at the trade and fashion runway shows featuring swim looks for 2016.

Challenging swimwear designers and professional surfer, Anastasia Ashley proved to be successful. On July 17, the Hammock and LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™ Brand kicked-off the weekend events at the W South Beach Hotel opening night fashion show with over fifty Hammock exhibitors showcasing their looks from their 2016 collection. Attendees were then introduced to the LYCRA® Challenge with a never-before-seen video reveal from LYCRA® Mover Anastasia Ashley. Anastasia, a professional surfer, model and blogger was selected for the LYCRA® Challenge because she leads such an active lifestyle. The LYCRA® Challenge required Anastasia wear swimsuits with LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™ fiber and the video featured a glimpse into Anastasia’s journey beginning in her hometown, San Clemente, California, where she did yoga, running, skateboarding and surfing. The next phase followed her to Staniel Cay, Bahamas where Anastasia swam with the pigs, braving deep ocean dives, swam and enjoyed paddle boarding into the sunset. The third phase she journeyed to Newark, Delaware at the INVISTA Applied Research Centre (ARC) facility to learn about the technology behind the innovation. During the challenge Anastasia wore suits with LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™ fiber from TYR and Vitamin A Swim demonstrating performance and fashion. In the end, Anastasia witnessed the longevity of LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™ fiber and challenged you to take the LYCRA® Challenge to see for yourself.

The LYCRA® brand team challenged swim designers this year at Hammock. The LYCRA® Design Challenge, which featured 10 designers, tasked with creating a one-of-a-kind swimsuit from 10 yards of red fabric (the color of the LYCRA® logo) containing LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™ fiber. Each designer sent one look down the runway with red fabric provided by leading mills Carvico, Jersey Lomellina, Eurojersey, Derun and Dejun. Competing brands include Acambha, Beauty and the Beach, Honey Bee Swim, indieSWIM, KORU, Leahray,  Shore, Solkissed Swimwear, SUMARIE, Verónika Pagán.

Based on originality, creativity and fit the judges were Western Wild Blogger Kaitlynn Carter, Director of Bikini.com Shannon Follansbee, and Senior Editor of Ocean Drive Julia Ford-Carther. Here are the top three winners and the prizes they received:

  • First prize – Ute Gaenshirt of Acambha, winning a photo shoot and ad in Ocean Drive magazine featuring winning design
  • Second prize – Ale Boggiano of Solkissed Swimwear, winning a two-night stay at the W South Beach Hotel & Residence for two guests
  • Third prize – Billi Doyle of Honey Bee Swim, winning a $500 value gift certificate

Later during the Swim Week following an intimate cocktail gathering, Colombian fabric producer Protela partnered with LYCRA® fiber to present a Colombian Trend fashion show featuring artistic and colorful swimwear looks designed by Maaji, Aqua Bendita, Hernan Zajar, Malai, Babalu and Saha.

Toward the end of the week, the LYCRA® Brand sponsored two mini-fashion shows featuring LYBETHRAS, a Brazilian brand and Lila Nicole, a local Florida based brand, with looks containing LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™ fiber. The shows took place at the 1 Hotel.
