Protecting the LYCRA® brand: Why brand names matter

INVISTA, owner of the LYCRA® brand, is joining fellow innovators and creators around the world to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day on April 26. Organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization, its purpose is to raise awareness of “the role that intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyrights) play in encouraging innovation and creativity.”

LYCRA® fiber is arguably one of the most important textile inventions of the 20th century. As a visitor to this website, it is a name you probably know very well, or you may simply associate it with “stretch”. Regardless, LYCRA® fiber has set a standard for high quality, durability and performance that is still associated with the brand to this day. It has set a standard for high quality, durability and performance that is still associated with the brand to this day.

Now in its seventh decade, LYCRA® fiber is a world-renowned brand name, a registered trademark, and a very important asset that INVISTA fights to protect because we believe consumers should know what they are buying. All that glitters isn’t gold! In other words, LYCRA® is a branded elastane fiber, and not every garment that ‘stretches’ is necessarily made with INVISTA’s first-class LYCRA® fiber.

This is why we diligently protect our IP… so you can rest assured they’re receiving the quality and performance expected of our products… so that we can keep developing game-changing innovations and investing in our labs, plants and communities… and so that we can continue making people’s lives better!

As a major driver of innovation, intellectual property (IP) rights create an environment ripe for new ideas. At INVISTA, we live and breathe innovation, as evidenced by the 1,000+ patent families the company holds, not to mention the many trademarks and trade secrets. We strive to develop products that create real value for society, and invest millions of dollars annually to develop patentable intellectual property and breakthrough products

Without IP protection, we would have missed out on many of the world’s most innovative products. And without innovation, we wouldn’t have LYCRA® fiber adding comfort, fit and movement to our clothes.

Help us raise awareness of the importance of IP protection and share with your friends Bridget Sciamanna’s article, available on LinkedIn.
